Hello Friend!

In the last couple of weeks, I have received three calendars, two sets of mailing labels and countless requests from nonprofit organizations I’ve never heard of before. I have to wonder how I got on their mailing lists in the first place!

I’m guessing the same thing happens to you.

As a nonprofit, we never lose sight of just how many choices people have when it comes to how they invest time, treasure and talent. There are so many reputable organizations doing important work—from puppies to water quality and everything in between. No one can support them all.

A few years ago, I was asked to meet with a young professional who wanted to volunteer but wasn’t sure where to start. My two cents of advice was simple: Figure out what you’re truly passionate about and go deep, rather than trying to be a part of everything that comes your way.

Being a Big Brother wasn’t for him, and that was okay. He chose another organization that connected with his passion. I still run into him occasionally, and he continues to thank me for that advice. He found something he cared deeply about and became very involved.

I think the same is true when it comes to giving.

Our agency works because people are passionate about kids who need to be connected with caring, consistent mentors—and many in our community choose to invest in this mission. Our supporters, partners and volunteers are drawn to this mission for many different reasons. Over the years, I’ve heard things like:

• “I had a life-changing mentor, and I want to pay it forward.”
• “I had parents who taught me the importance of showing up for others.”
• “I was taught from an early age to give back.”
• “I didn’t have a mentor, and I don’t want another young person to experience that.”
• “I want to invest in kids today, because they become the community of tomorrow.”
• “I was a Little.”

There isn’t just one right reason. There is simply your reason.
