Community-Based Littles
Big Brothers Big Sisters' Community-Based mentoring program brings together Littles (youth between the ages of 7 and 16) and Bigs (adults 18 and over) with similar interests to form a match. Once paired up, matches hang out two to four times a month to build their relationship and make some fun memories. Matches take part in agency sponsored activities such as craft nights, educational activities at SCTCC or a bus to the Twins game, and they also have the opportunity to do whatever activities both the Big and Little enjoy! Our matches enjoy everything from baking to crafts, dog walking to AirMaxx, walks around Lake George to apple orchards in the fall.
Once Bigs and Littles are matched, they can stay matched until the Little is 21. Mentors are expected to commit to meet with their mentee for a minimum of one year. Throughout the mentoring relationship, BBBS program staff monitor the matches and provide support to mentors. Typically, mentees and mentors meet two to four times each month. The mentoring relationship is designed to provide a sense of safety and security, emotional support, build social skills, set goals, build positive relationships, improve self-confidence, academic achievement, and future aspirations.
Littles in this program can be matched with a Big, Big Duo, or Big Family. Bigs in this program must be 18 or older. Check out the Big Happenings to see examples of past activities Community-Based matches have enjoyed!
